CHIROPRACTIC THERAPIES

Chiropractic is a natural system of health care and serves the needs of an estimated 20-30 million Americans each year.  The primary aim of chiropractic care is to restore and maintain health by properly aligning the spine.  Although the main method of treatment is spinal manipulation, chiropractors also use other therapies to treat their patients.  Listed below are a few of these and we recommend consulting with your chiropractor to find out which treatment is best for you.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Light electrical pulses are transmitted to specific areas of the body through electrodes placed on the skin.  This therapy can be used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and swelling and help reduce muscle atrophy.

Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound is a form of deep heat therapy created by sound vibrations.  Sound waves penetrate tissues deep in the body creating a pumping action and heat.  This micro-massage helps reduce swelling, decrease pain and stiffness and improve blood flow.

Ice
Ice therapy is often used to reduce swelling and pain caused by acute injuries or flare-ups of a chronic condition.  Properly applied ice reduces the temperature of the tissues directly on or below the surface of the skin.  This cooling numbs painful areas, constricts blood vessels and helps relax muscle spasms.

Heat
Heat, when applied to the skin, enlarges blood vessels below the surface and relaxes muscle tissue.  Heat therapy can calm irritated tissues and increase circulation to help speed the healing process.

Mechanical Traction
During this therapy, the patient lies face up on a special table while a system of rollers moves up and down the spine.  The rollers gently stretch the spinal joints, massage the muscles of the back and help increase mobility.

Therapeutic Exercise
Keeping muscles strong and flexible is an important step in the treatment and prevention of back, neck, and extremity problems.  Specific strengthening exercises can promote joint health, prevent muscle deterioration and protect the body from new or recurring injuries.

Trigger Point Therapy
Focal areas of irritability, sensitivity, and pain in muscles, ligaments, and tendons can cause pain to be referred to other areas of the body.  Proper "release" of these trigger points can not only decrease pain, but also improve flexibility and increase muscle strength.

Nutritional Counseling
Eating the proper foods that help the body heal and regenerate is just as important as avoiding those foods that reduce energy and limit your body's response to injury and illness.  Therefore, it is vital to know what foods to eat and what foods to avoid as well as the necessary supplements that you may need to maintain your overall wellness state.
